15 ships carrying urea, DAP and sulfur to India cross Hormuz: Government

Despite recent Middle East disruptions, India’s fertilizer supplies largely remain on track, with most shipments transiting the Strait of Hormuz safely and domestic production exceeding targets, according to the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers. The ministry said that out of 20 ships carrying fertilizers and raw materials for India, 15 have successfully transited the strait without any disruption. These include eight ships carrying 3.32 lakh tonnes of urea, four carrying 2.57 lakh tonnes of DAP and three ships carrying 1.11 lakh tonnes of sulphur, all scheduled to reach Indian ports on time.Another five vessels are in the queue for shipment, one of which is carrying 0.25 lakh tonne ammonia and the other 0.45 lakh tonne urea. Besides this, loading work is underway for two other urea ships and one sulfur ship. The ministry said that all these consignments are expected to arrive as per plan.Although the conflict affected maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz, the Center said uninterrupted fertilizer availability was maintained through “timely planning, effective coordination and continuous monitoring”. It said new sources of supply were secured through diplomatic outreach. To ensure adequate availability of urea, supplies have been arranged from Oman, Malaysia, Vietnam, Georgia, Nigeria, Russia, Finland, Egypt, Algeria, Turkey and Netherlands. For DAP and NPK fertilizers, cargo has been secured through the Red Sea route from Russia, Morocco, Egypt, USA, Jordan, South Korea, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia.Union Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister JP Nadda said the crisis has severely disrupted global supply chains, resulting in higher fertilizer prices and longer transit times, which is also impacting India. However, he said the government has protected the interests of farmers despite rising global prices and attributed this to the proactive steps taken by the Department of Fertilizers under the guidance of Prime Minister Modi. The ministry also said that natural gas supply to fertilizer plants, which had fallen by about 65% during the disruption, has now been fully restored to 100%. As a result, all urea manufacturing plants across the country are operating at full capacity.Domestic fertilizer production also exceeded the official target during Q1FY27. Urea production reached 71.55 lakh tonnes, 3.69 lakh tonnes more than the target of 67.86 lakh tonnes. DAP production stood at 9.84 lakh tonnes against the target of 8.61 lakh tonnes, while NPK production was 20.77 lakh tonnes and SSP production was 13.50 lakh tonnes. The ministry said India has already procured 197.56 lakh tonnes of fertilizer against the annual requirement of 383.9 lakh tonnes, which is more than 51 per cent of the country’s annual demand. As of July 2, the stock of urea was 69.08 lakh tonnes, DAP 16.64 lakh tonnes, Muriate of Potash 8.90 lakh tonnes, NPK 45.64 lakh tonnes and SSP 23.09 lakh tonnes, taking the total fertilizer availability to 163.35 lakh tonnes.According to the ministry, a combination of diversified imports, high domestic production and adequate stock levels have ensured satisfactory fertilizer availability across the country. It reiterated the government’s commitment to protect the interests of farmers by ensuring timely supply of fertilizers.
