Legendary French defender Marcel Desailly has urged Chelsea to sign one former Liverpool striker in particular.

After failing to find the form he had shown at former club Benfica, Uruguay international Darwin Núñez ended his time at Liverpool last summer, joining Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal for a fee of around £46 million.

Núñez played just 150 games for the Reds in the three full seasons he spent at the club, hitting the back of the net on 40 occasions during this period.

He was a member of the team that won the 2024-25 Premier League title, becoming just the second Uruguayan international after former Manchester United striker Diego Forlán to achieve this feat.

In an interview with OLBG TV, former Chelsea captain Desailly admitted that he believes Nunez would fit in “perfectly” at Chelsea, as he claims the 26-year-old was a victim of “bad luck” during his time at Liverpool.

“Núñez was for me, perfect. Right. He had bad luck at Liverpool, but if Liverpool chose him it means they saw real potential.

He wanted Darwin Núñez to enter the [Chelsea] system, with confidence, with Maresca, with a good system. He could have been a big help for Chelsea.

I really would have loved to see him on the team. “If he is still on the market and Saudi Arabia doesn’t suit him, he could be the one to come back.”

Núñez has made a positive start to his time in Saudi Arabia, contributing 11 goals in 16 appearances for Al-Hilal since the season began.
