BHOPALJanuary 13: Speculation is rife in Congress circles that party veteran and former chief minister Digvijay Sigh may return to Madhya Pradesh politics ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections with his Rajya Sabha term ending on April 9 this year.
Mr. Singh’s recent presentation on the roadmap for the party’s revival in Madhya Pradesh at the AICC headquarters has given rise to such speculations.
“Mr Singh recently made a presentation on the plan to rebuild the Congress base in Madhya Pradesh by strengthening the organization at the grassroots level, at the AICC headquarters in Delhi. Madhya Pradesh Congress unit president Jitu Patwari and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Umang Singhar, along with party affairs officer MP Harish Chaudhary, were present on the occasion,” a senior party functionary told this newspaper on Tuesday.
Singh has suggested intense organizational activities such as foot marches, rallies and holding small meetings across Madhya Pradesh in the next two-and-a-half years to galvanize the party for the 2028 Assembly elections, according to sources.
In fact, in the last few months the veteran leader was seen leading party rallies and actively participating in party programmes, besides touring different parts of the state to connect with party leaders and workers.
Singh, along with former chief minister Kamal Nath, brought the party to power in Madhya Pradesh in the 2018 Assembly elections after a gap of 15 years.
However, Kamal Nath’s government could last only 15 months with infighting in the Congress, leading party heavyweight Jyotiraditya Scindia quit the Congress along with two dozen MLAs to bring it down in March 2020.
Later, Mr. Scindia and his followers joined the BJP.
Replying to a media question here on Tuesday, Singh said the party leadership decides the responsibilities of the leaders.
“But I can say that I am leaving the RS seat free,” he joked.
