Amazon.com Inc. has announced layoffs affecting more than 16,000 corporate jobs, amid “increasing competition over AI.”
Beth Galetti, senior vice president of people experience and technology at Amazon, said in a blog post on Wednesday that the company will offer US-based employees 90 days to search for a new role internally, as well as severance and other transition support.
Galetti said, “Some of you may ask if this is the beginning of a new rhythm – where we announce sweeping cuts every few months. That is not our plan.” “We are working to strengthen our organization by reducing layers, increasing ownership and removing bureaucracy.”
Of course, this is the second round of Amazon layoffs since it cut 14,000 jobs in October 2025, as Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy is determined to cut management layers and simplify bureaucracy. Last year, he warned employees that AI would decimate the workforce as Amazon automates most of its tasks.
Amazon employs about 1.57 million people overall, the majority of whom are in warehouses. The corporate workforce is approximately 350,000.
