Southampton manager Tonda Eckert praised his “quality players” for their work in the emphatic victory over QPR on Tuesday night.

The Saints took an early lead through Finn Azaz before a brace from Kuryu Matsuki and goals from Leo Scienza and James Bree.

The victory takes them into seventh place in the table and four points behind sixth-place Wrexham.

“There are many games where we could have scored more than one and sometimes that is enough, but today there were some key moments that went well and we have some quality players on the field.

“These night games are always special at St Mary’s,” Eckert told BBC Radio Solent.

“It’s a quick pitch and we needed to make sure we were really ready and we did well from the start, the first goal was because of that.

“I have a lot of confidence and I think that each player needs to support themselves, he (Matsuki) has lowered his head and worked hard despite not playing many minutes and today is a consequence of that.

“We’re not where we want to be yet, we have to keep our heads down, stay humble and keep working. We need to turn this into a really good month when we have our game on Saturday.”

Saints are next in action when they travel to already relegated Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
