Trump’s Secretary of Education Linda Mc Mahon gave a surprising answer when asked about Fox News Harris Faulkner how well American children do in school.
“I’m excited to have this conversation because you bring a lot of light to a topic that has been difficult,” Faulkner began. “First of all, tell us where we are with respect to what children are doing academically in the country.”
“We’re doing terribly,” McMahon said. “I mean, our education system has failed our kids. The latest NAEP scores, which were released right after the president took office, and that’s a national report card, only about 30% of high school and eighth graders can read or do math proficiently. Think about that. Public schools nationwide only about 30%. In some places, 35%. But it’s just terrible.”
Later in the interview, McMahon changed course and said that children were doing “very well” with a traveling history quiz developed by the Trump administration.
“I know you’re on tour right now, all 50 states, whether it’s you and/or your team,” Faulker said. “It’s a nonpartisan tour and it usually includes a speech followed by a history quiz and actually a game show of sorts, so we’ll get into that. But you’ve got to queue up the outrage on the left anyway,” Faulkner said.
“While nonpartisan and completely positive, at least four stops have been canceled in Massachusetts, Alabama and Connecticut. Stops in Wisconsin, New Jersey and Illinois have been met with protests,” Faulkner said.
“It’s crazy,” McMahon said. “I don’t know what you think it’s about. If you come and hear the questions, they’re about the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, our ancestors. It’s about learning about our country in civics, and a lot of the questions are about American history. And we also have questions tailored to your states. It’s a civics lesson. It’s in tune with the president’s 250th celebration, the country’s 250th celebration.”
“How are you doing with the questions?” -Faulkner asked.
“They’re doing very well with those questions. It could be that they got them in advance. I don’t know,” McMahon said.
