India’s stock market opened with gains today, even as concerns over the durability of the US-Iran ceasefire may keep risk appetite in check. Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. declined after fourth-quarter earnings. The 30-share S&P BSE Sensex rose 1.29 or 990.85 points to hit an intraday high of 77,622.50, while the broader NSE Nifty 50 reclaimed the 24,000-level. Thirteen of the 15 sectoral indices compiled by NSE declined, led by Nifty IT, while Nifty Media emerged as the top gainer.

TCS finished FY2016 with a modest improvement in quarterly growth, but it was not enough to offset the broader slowdown, pushing it to its first full-year revenue decline in dollar terms since listing.

Foreign portfolio investors sold Indian stocks on Thursday, taking total outflows so far in April to $4.9 billion.

“Going forward, a major pressure on the market will be FPI selling,” VK Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Investments Ltd., said in an email. “It appears that FPIs are determined to sell in India and shift money to other markets such as South Korea and Taiwan, where earnings growth prospects are much better in 2026. However, this will be a short-term approach.”

Sensex Nifty Live: Rupee strengthens against US dollar

The rupee rose 10 paise to 92.41 against the US dollar in early trade today, even as the USD/INR pair faces risks from rising global tensions, especially the US-Iran conflict.

Forex traders said the rupee is likely to see higher volatility intraday as the deadline for RBI instructions to banks to limit their overnight positions to $100 million expires today.

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 92.58 against the US dollar, then rose to 92.41 against the US dollar in early trade, registering a gain of 10 paise over its previous close.

On Thursday, the rupee closed at 92.51 against the US dollar with a marginal gain of 3 paise.
