The current generation of the BMW M5 has been around for a couple of years and puts its 717-horsepower hybrid powertrain to work. It’s a supercar disguised as a sedan (or station wagon) that will receive a facelift for the 2027 model year. This won’t just be a light touch-up, however.
As seen in the spy video posted on Carspotter Jeroen’s YouTube channel, the new BMW M5, seen testing at the Nürburgring, will differ substantially from the current model, adopting the brand’s new design direction seen in the latest iX3 and i3.
Influence of the new class
The first change appears at the front, where the new BMW M5 clearly resembles the new i3: a horizontally oriented double grille that integrates the lighting elements, as shown in our render. This isn’t a typical move for a facelift, but as noted, the 2027 BMW M5 will be markedly different from the current version. The same goes for the rear, where two pairs of outer exhaust tips can be distinguished.

The cabin of the new BMW does not appear in the video. However, there will reportedly be a major overhaul there too, with the adoption of Panoramic Vision, the new dashboard design seen on the iX3 and i3, which features a large central screen and a long, thin screen positioned just below the windshield.
V8 remains in place
The spy images of the 2027 BMW M5 leave no room for doubt: under the hood there will once again be a 4.4-liter V8, combined with an electric motor integrated into an eight-speed automatic transmission. In the current generation, that configuration produces 717 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque, numbers that could increase in the new M5, along with its electric range (currently 42 miles), thanks to the adoption of higher-capacity batteries.
