The Coimbatore School Education Department will review the performance of students and schools after the district fell to 13th place in Class 12 exam results from the fourth place it had occupied for the last four years.

Officials said the review would cover pass percentage, subject performance, centum scores and performance of public, aided and private schools. Particular attention is expected to be given to schools that recorded low passing percentages and to students who require additional academic support.
Education director R. Balamurali said the district’s move from fourth place last year to 13th place this year could be due to multiple factors. He said the overall difference in passing percentage compared to last year was only 0.8%.
He said a large number of students appeared for the exam this year and around 730 students failed only one subject. A slight decline in the pass percentage of female students in public schools could also be one of the probable reasons for the drop in rankings, he added.
The CEO said the department would conduct block-wise and topic-wise analysis to identify areas requiring improvement. Education officials at the district level are expected to hold conversations with teachers based on the review’s findings.
Officials said steps would be taken to strengthen training and academic monitoring in higher secondary classes. Guidance would also be provided to students on higher education admissions and career opportunities.
In Coimbatore educational district, 27,871 students appeared for the exam, of which 26,977 passed, registering a pass percentage of 96.79. In the Pollachi educational district, 7,577 students appeared and 7,287 passed, recording a passing percentage of 96.17.
Among the schools in Coimbatore district, corporate schools recorded a pass percentage of 91.31, government schools 93.39, aided schools 96.41 and private schools 99.03.
A total of 158 schools achieved 100% results in the district. Among them were 13 public schools, seven charter schools and 138 private schools.
