Redmi has revealed more details about the upcoming Redmi Note 17 ahead of its launch in China, confirming that the smartphone will feature an unusually large 7-inch OLED display and an 8,000 mAh battery. The company also unveiled the device in a new “Meteor Purple” finish, while reiterating several key specifications through a series of Weibo posts.
The announcements come as Redmi prepares to unveil the Redmi Note 17 and Redmi Note 17 Pro on July 14, with both devices expected to push battery capacity far beyond what Redmi has offered in the mid-range smartphone segment.
Key details of the Redmi Note 17
Redmi has confirmed that the standard Note 17 will feature the largest display ever seen on a Redmi Note smartphone: a 7-inch OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, up to 1,200 nits of overall brightness, and multiple eye-protection features. The phone will also pack an 8,000mAh battery with support for 45W wired charging and 22.5W reverse wired charging.
The company further confirmed a 50MP main rear camera and revealed the device in a new Meteor Purple color option, which features a textured rear design inspired by meteor trails crossing the night sky.
Recent benchmark listings suggest that the Redmi Note 17 could be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 chipset, while the Redmi Note 17 Pro is rumored to use the new Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 processor. Redmi has already confirmed that the Pro model will feature an even larger 9,000mAh battery backed by a five-year battery replacement warranty.
While smartphones have grown in height over the years, 7-inch screens are still relatively rare outside of gaming phones and foldables. Most devices today offer displays between 6.6 and 6.8 inches, making the Redmi Note 17 one of the few mainstream smartphones to cross the 7-inch mark.
The larger screen could appeal to users who consume a lot of video content, read documents, attend online classes or frequently multitask on their phones. Combined with the massive battery, it also positions the device as a potential option for users who prioritize ruggedness over compactness. However, the trade-off is likely to be a larger footprint that may not be suitable for one-handed use.
On paper, the Redmi Note 17 seems to stand out by combining two features rarely seen together in this price segment: a 7-inch OLED display and an 8,000 mAh battery. Buyers who value long battery life, media consumption and productivity may find it more attractive than similarly priced alternatives that offer conventional 6.7-inch displays and smaller batteries. However, those who prefer compact phones or prioritize camera performance and processing power can still find better balanced options elsewhere.
