Google, in India, has announced several new initiatives underpinned by artificial intelligence (AI) as a continuation of the tech giant’s commitment towards India’s AI ambitions. The company also said at the Google I/O Connect India keynote on Tuesday that Google Play and the Android ecosystem helped contribute Last year, India’s app publishers and digital economy got a revenue of Rs 5.3 lakh crore.

Preeti Lobana, Country Manager, Google India, said, “India’s builders are already deploying AI faster than almost anywhere else. As we transition to the agentic era, where AI is moving from answering questions to safely executing tasks, our focus is on providing the underlying infrastructure and guardrails needed to safely scale the ecosystem.”

Google DeepMind is creating a ‘rigorous’ AI Research Foundation course that will prepare learners to build and improve large language models and drive high-impact AI research in India. It will be available on the Google Skills platform, and the tech giant has partnered with NASSCOM and IISc Bangalore to make this program available in educational institutions across India.

The education focus extends to include Google Play Academy courses, which will be made available to over 10,000 Indian developers and app makers. Google is partnering with the state governments of Rajasthan, Odisha and Madhya Pradesh. He says the course will help developers leverage advances in agentic AI and skills to build as well as scale app businesses.

Google is also launching the DeepMind ATL companion desktop app that gives teachers a Gemini-powered assistant to help them deliver Atal Tinkering Labs’ curriculum and design practical experiments for students, marking a milestone in the company’s association with the Atal Innovation Mission. Google says ATL Saathi is being rolled out in 100 schools this year, with the goal of eventually reaching 10,000 schools.

As local relevance of AI remains important for Google, researchers at AIIMS Delhi are now leveraging the multimodal MedGemma open model to develop new India-specific models for leprosy as well as sexual and reproductive health. Google says these models will have the ability to help patients and health care professionals identify and manage conditions based on images and text input.

AIIMS will make the results of all these localized clinical health models available to the Indian developer ecosystem.

“The ultimate measure of AI progress is not just the model parameters, but also the positive change it drives. India is supporting this as it is adopting AI at every level of the economy – from local businesses to national health initiatives,” says Dr Manish Gupta, senior director, India and APAC, Google DeepMind.

He further added, “Bringing in our leading AI, on-premises capabilities and commitment to security, we aim to accelerate this momentum, and look forward to leading India’s AI ambitions from the country’s AI learners, teachers, builders and innovators.”

Gemini Live, the real-time voice and vision interaction assistant, now supports over 25 Indian languages ​​and dialects, including Sanskrit, Bhojpuri and Maithili.

Google says they are making their specialized cyber security agent, Sec-Gemini v3, available to trusted government and enterprise testers, including Flipkart. Sec-Gemini can reason over complex security data and help teams investigate incidents faster. This will be relevant for Indian enterprises and government service systems at a time when cyber security threats using agentive AI tools are increasing, with threat perception becoming higher.
