With the end of the season fast approaching, every match now has added meaning as City look to secure a place in the finals.
The standings remain very congested heading into the final rounds, meaning there is little room for error in the final five games. While results have been mixed at times throughout the campaign, there were encouraging signs ahead of the international break.
A hard-fought 1-0 victory against Sydney FC, secured thanks to a Max Caputo header, was followed by a strong performance in Perth a few days later.
On that occasion, Daniel Arzani’s first-half goal put City on course for another three points, but a late equalizer allowed the spoils to be shared.
While that result left a sense of frustration, the break has provided an opportunity to reset and refocus, with all attention now focused on what is shaping up to be a decisive stretch of the season, beginning with Saturday night’s clash against the Wanderers.
A great week awaits you
City’s return home presents equal parts opportunities and challenges, with four of the final five matches being played at AAMI Park.
Saturday’s match against Western Sydney marks the start of a demanding run, with three home games over eight days. The Central Coast Mariners look forward to Tuesday night, before the visit of Wellington Phoenix the following Sunday.
With one match still to be played, this block of matches is shaping up to be a crucial window to move up the standings and strengthen the fight to finish in the top six. Nine points will be on offer from the three games, and taking advantage of home advantage will be key.
Saturday will also be the third meeting between City and the Wanderers this season, with the previous two meetings ending in 1-1 draws at CommBank Stadium. Max Caputo found the net in the first round clash, while Aziz Behich scored with a superb free kick when the teams met again in February.
There is no shortage of initial options
After going through injury-affected periods of the season, City are now in a much healthier position heading into the final weeks, giving Aurelio Vidmar valuable depth on the pitch.
Aside from Takeshi Kanamori (knee) and Alessandro Lopane (quadriceps), who Aurelio Vidmar confirmed on Friday will likely miss the rest of the season, City are close to full strength, with Mathew Leckie pushing towards a return and potentially in contention for minutes in the coming weeks.
Andreas Kuen’s return from suspension will strengthen the midfield, but also creates a national team headache as competition for places intensifies. Across the park, there are several players pushing for starting spots.
Harrison Delbridge offers an experienced option in defense, while further forward, Andrew Nabbout continues to improve his fitness and could be in line for more minutes following his recent return from injury.
Meanwhile, players like Medin Memeti, Emin Durakovic and Zane Schreiber present alternative options in attack and midfield.
