Back-to-back earthquakes reported near Angwin on Tuesday afternoon

Two earthquakes struck near Angwin, near Pope Valley in Napa County, on Tuesday afternoon, July 7, the first of a preliminary magnitude of 3.6 followed shortly after by a smaller preliminary earthquake of magnitude 2.6, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The first earthquake was reported around 2:30 p.m. with the epicenter near Angwin, about 17 miles northeast of Santa Rosa, the USGS said. The earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 3.9 miles.

According to the USGS, a second aftershock of a magnitude 2.6 earthquake occurred about two minutes later in the same area.

Some residents in the surrounding Napa County area, particularly near St. Helena, reported minor shaking on social media. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The USGS had not identified any significant impacts from the earthquakes as of Tuesday afternoon.
