Interim coach Silvio Baldini wants Italy to be “relaxed” and play with “freedom” in the friendly against Greece.

The Azzurri, who will miss a third consecutive World Cup, will play their final game of the season at the Pankritio Stadium on Sunday.

Under-21 coach Baldini, temporarily in charge while the search for Gennaro Gattuso’s successor continues, handed out 15 senior debuts during Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Luxembourg.

Italy fielded its youngest starting eleven (with an average age of 21 years and 354 days) since its friendly against Austria in December 1912 (21 years and 308 days).

Francesco Pio Esposito scored the winning goal with his fourth international goal, becoming the third Azzurri player to score more than three times before turning 21, after Giuseppe Meazza (11) and Gianni Rivera (five).

And Baldini is likely to turn things around again when the four-time world champions visit Greece.

“I hope to see the same things we saw in Luxembourg,” he told Sky Sport Italia. “Although this time the rivals are of another level.

“I would like the boys to start the game relaxed, ready to show their freedom.

“It does not mean that they will not be present in the game, but they will be able to bring out all the technical quality at the disposal of the Italian team.”
