NEED TO KNOW

  • Chappell Roan wore a sheer maroon dress that hung with nipple rings at the 2026 Grammy Awards
  • Roan won Best New Artist last year and is nominated for two awards this year.
  • During his first appearance at the awards show in 2025, Roan wore four different outfits throughout the night.

Chappell Roan is enjoying his final moments as the reigning Best New Artist ahead of the 2026 Grammy Awards.

The “Hot to Go” pop star, who received two nominations this year, stepped out for her second appearance on the awards show’s red carpet. And this year, it’s somehow even more spectacular than its impressive debut in 2025.

She caused a sensation on the red carpet when she arrived in a custom sheer Mugler dress with an invisible bodice from which the maroon fabric hung. Specifically, the maroon dress covered fake nipples and nipple rings. It flowed in a queue behind her and showed her black panties underneath. For red carpet interviews, she donned a matching maroon cape over her look. She also wore her long red hair in front of her breasts to give her a more demure angle.

Roan’s look was inspired by Manfred Thierry Mugler’s Spring/Summer 1998 “Jeu de Paume” couture collection, revised for the Spring/Summer 2026 collection by Miguel Castro Freitas.

Roan’s nominations this year include Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance, both for his hit single “The Subway,” which came out in late July. One of her fellow nominees in both categories is Sabrina Carpenter, who lost the Best New Artist race to Roan in 2025.

While Roan is not scheduled to perform, it was announced before the ceremony that he will be present to present an award.

In the week leading up to the Grammys, she was honored at music industry nonprofit We Are Moving the Needle’s 2026 Resonator Awards on Tuesday, January 27. Heart’s Nancy Wilson presented Roan with the Harmonizer Award for using his music to drive social change.

“I think it’s just the duty of an artist, and anyone who has money, it’s their duty to give it away,” Roan said. “I really don’t know what else there is to harmony besides giving. So thank you for acknowledging me.”

Roan has been extremely outspoken about social justice issues since the beginning of her career, criticizing music labels during her Best New Artist of 2025 acceptance speech and demanding that they support their artists with living wages and healthcare.

She gave her speech in a gray ready-to-wear dress by Acne Studios, paired with a yellow hennin. The singer’s entire acceptance speech was not her first, second or third appearance of the night, but rather her four.

She walked the red carpet at the start of the night in a tulle dress featuring Degas’ famous ballerinas from Jean Paul Gaultier’s Spring 2003 Haute Couture collection, and once inside she donned a layered blue Thom Browne Haute Couture 2024 dress with shoulder pads.

When it was her turn to perform, she rocked a custom Zana Bayne while singing “Pink Pony Club.”

While Roan dedicated a grid post to his 2025 Grammy nominations, this year he opted for a post on his Instagram Stories. On Nov. 7, he kept the message short, writing, “thank you @recordingacademy.”
