Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu), Jul 2 (PTI) CPI(M) state secretary P Shanmugam on Thursday said the opposition DMK could not accept being out of power and was consequently resorting to “unethical practices” to regain control.

There have apparently been “bargaining” attempts to overthrow the TVK government, he said.

The people of Tamil Nadu voted for regime change, Shanmugam said, criticizing the DMK for refusing to accept the poll verdict favoring Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in the April Assembly elections.

“Recent incidents show that the DMK is indulging in horse-trading and trying to poach legislators to destabilize the newly elected government,” Shanmugam told reporters here.

Terming horse-trading as “unhealthy politics”, the veteran Marxist leader demanded that the state government take strict action against those involved in such a practice that undermined democratic processes.

The government should register cases against those involved in these activities and ensure that they receive appropriate punishment legally, he added.

“DMK president MK Stalin’s assertion that Tamil Nadu will face elections soon and there will be a change of government, which was not fully understood earlier, has now become clear. This is reflected in the recent controversies,” Shanmugam said, attacking the former ally.

Although shifting loyalties was common in Tamil Nadu politics, the practice of trying to influence or “buy off” legislators was “unhealthy and unacceptable politics”, the CPI(M) state secretary said. PTI JSP JSP ROH
