What El Nino gives to the Atlantic it takes away elsewhere. El Niño increases tropical cyclone activity in the central and eastern Pacific while simultaneously suppressing the Atlantic – which has a direct impact on the circulations approaching the Latin American or Pacific coast. Previous El Niño analogs include devastating floods in California and Peru caused by supercharged Pacific moisture in 1997–98. California’s insured loss risk, already stressed after years of wildfire losses and carrier withdrawal from the homeowners market, will face a different but equally severe test from major flooding and atmospheric river events under a record-strength El Niño.
