The Enforcement Directorate on Thursday (January 8, 2026) conducted searches in several states in connection with a fake government employment scam run by an organized gang.
Searches are being carried out at 15 locations in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur and Motihari; Calcutta West Bengal; Ernakulam, Pandalam, Adoor and Kodur in Kerala; Chennai in Tamil Nadu; Rajkot of Gujarat; Gorakhpur, Prayagraj and Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh.
“While the scam was initially detected in the name of Indian Railways, investigation revealed that it covers over 40 government organizations and departments including Forests, Railways, India Post, Income Tax, High Court, Public Works Department, Bihar government, Delhi Development Authority, Rajasthan Secretariat and others,” an official said.
The gang used fake email accounts posing as official government domains to send fraudulent enrollment letters. To gain trust, the scammers paid starting salaries for two or three months to some victims, who held various positions in railways and other organizations.
