Free sports sessions are to be offered in Sheffield during the school summer holidays to “get families active”.

More than a dozen parks and green spaces across the city will host the two-hour sessions, including Firth Park, Greenhill Park and Gleadless Common.

Football, rounders and other multi-sport sessions will be offered in the afternoon and evening slots, with family-friendly games for all ages and abilities also promised.

Everyone Active – which has a contract with Sheffield City Council to run leisure, health and welfare facilities – will lead the programmes, as well as offering free food and drink.

Lorenzo Clarke, of Everyone Active, said: “This scheme provides activities for people who may not be able to go on holidays due to affordability.

“We have deployed expert trainers so that people can try new things as well as activities they have done before.”

Everyone Active is contracted to run facilities including the English Institute of Sport, Ponds Forge International Sports Center and Ice Sheffield.

Summer activity sessions run from 20 July to 28 August, advance booking is advised., external

Councilor Brian Holmshaw, chair of the communities, parks and leisure policy committee at the council, said: “The school summer holidays are always an exciting time for children in Sheffield, but it can challenge parents when deciding how to keep their children entertained during the day.

“These activities are perfect for getting families out and about across town, getting them active and having lots of fun in the sun.”
