In view of weakness in the international markets, the price of gold fell by Rs 589 to Rs 1.55 lakh per 10 grams in futures trade on Monday.On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold contracts for April delivery fell Rs 589, or 0.38 per cent, to Rs 1,55,306 per 10 gram in a business turnover of 7,695 lots.In global markets, Comex gold futures for April contract slipped US$24.31, or 0.48 per cent, to US$5,021.99 an ounce in New York.“Gold slipped near US$5,000 an ounce after rising over 2 per cent in the previous session on weaker-than-expected US consumer price index (CPI) inflation data,” said Jigar Trivedi, senior research analyst at IndusInd Securities.Manav Modi, commodities analyst at Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd., said geopolitical risks are elevated following reports that Washington has deployed the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R Ford to the Middle East to provide safe haven for gold amid Iran nuclear talks.He said markets are also considering the potential inflation impact of US President Donald Trump’s new tariff threats as well as concerns over the Federal Reserve’s future policy path.“For the first time in almost a month, gold is trading at a discount as demand from China remains strong, with Shanghai warehouse stocks exceeding 100 tonnes,” Modi said. He said this underlines the strong physical buying interest.US markets were closed for the President’s Day holiday, while Chinese markets were closed for a week for the Lunar New Year holiday.
