Ahmedabad, Jul 2 (PTI) Heavy rain lashed several districts of Gujarat on Thursday, with Junagadh receiving the most, while three people fell into open drains in separate incidents but survived, officials said.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rainfall occurred at most places in south Gujarat, at several places in Saurashtra region and at isolated places in north Gujarat.

“Heavy to very heavy rain with isolated extremely heavy rain is very likely in southern districts of Gujarat namely Surat, Navsari, Valsad, in Amreli and Bhavnagar districts of Saurashtra and also in Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli from 8.30 am on July 3,” according to the IMD.

The southwest monsoon has moved further towards Gujarat but has not yet covered the entire state, he said.

The IMD issued a heavy to very heavy rainfall warning with isolated extremely heavy rainfall over south Gujarat in its forecast till 8.30 am on July 6.

On Thursday, Mangrol of Junagadh recorded the highest rainfall at 6 pm at 245 mm, followed by district talukas of Keshod (242 mm) and Manavadar (213 mm), according to data from the State Emergency Operation Centre.

Rainwater pooling in Junagadh led to multiple accidents, with videos circulating on social media showing two people on a motorcycle along a flooded road at Azad Chowk falling into an open drain that was completely hidden under flood water.

In a separate incident in Junagadh, a woman walking on the road with a child accidentally stepped on a hidden open drain after misjudging the depth of the water. She lost her balance and fell into the drain.

They all survived.

Sutrapada of Gir Somnath district received 183 mm of rain at 6 pm, followed by Maliya Hatina of Junagadh (179 mm), Jamjodhpur of Jamnagar (158 mm), Patan Veraval of Gir Somnath (145 mm) and Kutiyana of Porbandar (131 mm).

Surat’s Olpad received 94 mm of rainfall at 6 pm, followed by Rajkot’s Upleta (88 mm) and Vadodara’s Sinor (75 mm). PTI KVM PDRSY
