'Historic deal': Donald Trump lauds India-US trade deal

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday described the recently concluded agreement with India as a “historic trade deal” and said it will significantly boost US coal exports.Addressing a press briefing, Trump said, “America is now the number one energy producer in the world… We are becoming a major energy exporter. In the last few months, we have made historic trade agreements with Japan, Korea, India and others to dramatically increase our coal exports… The quality of our coal is considered the best anywhere in the world.”His comments come days after Washington released a fact sheet laying out a “way forward” for the recently concluded trade deal with India. The two countries reached an interim trade agreement after nearly a year of talks that began in February 2025. The agreement was announced following a telephone conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump last week, during which the two leaders finalized the outline of the interim agreement.Under the agreement, India will benefit from a reduction in US tariffs from 50% to 18% on a range of exports. These include textiles and apparel, leather and footwear, plastic and rubber goods, organic chemicals, home decor products, artisan items and select machinery categories.India and the US had held several rounds of talks in recent months after talks stalled after the Trump administration imposed 50% tariffs on imports from India. This 25% duty was introduced in August, after Washington alleged that India was fueling Russia’s “war machine” in Ukraine through its purchases.
