The Indian Navy has taken delivery of INS Dunagiri, the fifth Nilgiri class stealth frigate (Project 17A), marking a major breakthrough in indigenous warship construction. The addition strengthens India’s maritime capabilities and highlights progress in self-reliant defense manufacturing.
INS Dunagiri Overview
INS Dunagiri is the fifth ship of the Nilgiri class frigates of Project 17A. It has been designed by Warship Design Bureau and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilding and Engineers Limited (GRSE), Kolkata. The ship is a modern reincarnation of the earlier INS Dunagiri, a Leander-class frigate that served in the Indian Navy and symbolizes technological continuity and advancement.
Design and propulsion system.
The ship is equipped with a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, which integrates both diesel engines and gas turbines. This configuration allows for efficient navigation at lower speeds using diesel engines and high speed operations using gas turbines. It features controllable pitch propellers and an advanced integrated platform management system, ensuring greater operational efficiency and automation.
Advanced weapons systems
INS Dunagiri is equipped with a complete set of modern weaponry. It includes BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles, MF-STAR radar and the MRSAM air defense system. Additionally, the ship is armed with a 76mm super-rapid gun mount, close-in weapon systems, and anti-submarine warfare capabilities such as rockets and torpedoes. These systems enable multidimensional combat operations in air, surface and subterranean domains.
Important information for exams
- Project 17A focuses on stealth frigates with advanced features and indigenous design.
- CODOG propulsion combines diesel engines and gas turbines for greater flexibility.
- BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile jointly developed by India and Russia.
- MRSAM is used for medium-range surface-to-air defense.
Strategic importance for Indian Navy
The addition of INS Dunagiri enhances the Indian Navy’s blue water capabilities and strengthens maritime security in the Indian Ocean region. It reflects India’s growing expertise in advanced shipbuilding and supports the broader goal of defense self-reliance. The frigate will play a key role in safeguarding sea lanes, conducting surveillance and participating in multi-domain naval operations.
