“I want to make money, but I want to make money the right way, ethically. But more importantly, I want to be able to use this money to give back.” Charles Gitonga talks to entrepreneur and businessman Mohammed Dewji about becoming one of Africa’s youngest billionaires and how he plans to use his wealth. Mohammed Deuzi is a Tanzanian businessman, entrepreneur and philanthropist who has earned his wealth primarily from his family business, an East African conglomerate founded by his grandparents and expanded by his father in the 1970s. It deals with textile manufacturing, flour milling, beverages and edible oils. About twenty-five years ago, there were no dollar billionaires in Africa. Today, only 23 remain, not a large number for a continent rich in mineral wealth and abundant with relatively cheap labour. Their combined wealth exceeds US$100 billion. Devji signed the Giving Pledge in 2016, promising to donate at least half of his wealth to charitable causes. He explains why he believes the onus is on billionaires to give back.
