ChatGPT has clearly been dominating the market with its services and outperforming all the competition. And this moment serves as a period in which OpenAI plans to capitalize on the capabilities of its AI model. According to recent reports related to the same, Sam Altman’s company plans to include ads in the chatbot to open a new revenue stream after the subscription-based model.
Altman has previously said several times that he is not totally against the idea of having ads in the chatbot, similar to the personalized ads we see on Instagram. When OpenAI Applications CEO Fidji Simo was asked about the inclusion of ads in ChatGPT in an interaction with Wired, he said: “Advertising as a model works very well when you have a lot of commercial intent.” We already have a lot of people coming and asking for purchasing advice. The important thing before considering ads is to make sure that our shopping experience is fantastic and that people come and really explore all the products they want and get great recommendations.”
He further said: ‘Everything we do will have to be extremely respectful of that. That’s why we haven’t announced anything in the ads, because if we ever did something, it would have to be a very different model than what’s been done before.’ For those who don’t know, Simo has experience building and scaling advertising businesses, and also worked at Meta.
What will ads look like on ChatGPT?
A report published by The Information suggested that ads on ChatGPT will be based on ChatGPT memory for individual users. Because of this, the ads displayed on the platform will be quite personalized based on what users are looking for. Some reports also projected that if OpenAI includes ads, they will be able to add billions to their profits. So far there has been no confirmation from official sources in this regard.
