CHENNAI: A well-marked low pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Central Bay is expected to cause widespread rain across Tamil Nadu over the next few days, with the Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) forecasting isolated heavy rain in several western districts and ghats until May 19.

The RMC said conditions are becoming favorable for the advance of southwest monsoon over parts of southern Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea and Andaman and Nicobar Islands around May 16.

RMC officials said light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning is likely at isolated places over the Western Ghats and coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. Similar weather conditions are expected in the delta areas on Thursday.

Nilgiris district has been placed under heavy rain warning on May 14, 15 and 17. Heavy rainfall is also likely over the ghat areas of Coimbatore on May 15 and in Theni district on May 16.

Meanwhile, maximum temperatures dropped by 2-3°C at isolated places in Tamil Nadu during the last 24 hours. Chennai is likely to witness partly cloudy skies with light rains for the next two days, with temperatures expected to hover between 35 and 36°C.
