Auto sales in India remained largely stagnant in March 2026 amid early signs of a slowdown due to the war in West Asia. According to analysts, demand for automobiles of all shapes and sizes was broadly strong due to policy support driven by the festive environment, favorable base effect and sustained growth due to the GST rate cut in September last year.
However, the outlook is clearly being cautiously optimistic rather than bullish. Due to external factors like untimely rains and geopolitical concerns, inquiries from dealers, especially fleet operators, are witnessing a slight decline.

Total sales of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd’s CV business grew 13% year-on-year to 4,267 units in March 2026. This includes 2,457 units sold by SML Mahindra Ltd, which grew 6% year-on-year last month.
“Despite geopolitical headwinds, the commercial-vehicle industry has maintained strong momentum, underscoring the resilience of the sector,” Vinod Sahay, president of Mahindra & Mahindra’s CV business, said in an exchange filing on Wednesday.
“Looking ahead, the trajectory for FY27 is mixed – while replacement demand and government-led projects are expected to support volumes, fuel cost volatility and supply-chain disruptions may impact sentiment.”
