Thousands of users reported service problems with Microsoft products on Thursday, a day after a brief outage occurred with the same products.
REDMOND, Wash. – Microsoft resolved an outage early Friday morning after tens of thousands of people reported problems with various products on Thursday.
More than 15,000 users reported issues using Microsoft 365 products around 3 p.m. ET, according to outage tracking site DownDetector. Another 12,000 people reported problems with Microsoft Outlook and 500 reported problems with Microsoft Teams.
Microsoft support teams were investigating the outage, the company said in a social media post. Researchers blamed the problem on the service’s infrastructure.
“We have identified a portion of the service infrastructure in North America that is not processing traffic as expected,” the company said. “We are working to restore the infrastructure to a healthy state to achieve recovery. More information can be found at https://status.cloud.microsoft or at MO1221364 if accessible.”
Nearly two hours after the outage began, researchers said they had restored the infrastructure to a “healthy state,” but said more load balancing is required to mitigate the impact of the outage.
“We are directing traffic to alternative infrastructure to achieve recovery,” Microsoft said in a social media post at 4:14 p.m. ET. “More information can be found at https://status.cloud.microsoft or at MO1221364 if available.”
Microsoft officially announced that the outage had been resolved hours later, around 1:30 a.m. Eastern Time, saying that mail flow is stable and access to the affected services has been restored.
Microsoft resolved a brief outage on January 21, which researchers said was caused by a third-party network issue. That outage only lasted a little over an hour.
