The victory came amid recent protests over the corporation’s plan to cut down hundreds of trees in the Tapovan area for a proposed Sadhugram ahead of the Kumbh Mela. Contesting the polls independently, the BJP emerged as the clear winner.
The Nashik Municipal Corporation polls were held after a prolonged gap caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, reservation disputes and multiple court cases. Following instructions from the Supreme Court, the State Election Commission finalized the electoral calendar, clearing the way for these long-awaited civic elections.
The vote covered 122 seats in 31 districts. In several booths, voting continued beyond the scheduled time due to strong voter turnout, reflecting high public interest after years without an elected civic body.
Shortly after the elections ended, the main political parties adopted a confident tone. The BJP, which had earlier claimed it could win up to 100 seats, said voter response pointed to a strong mandate and it could secure at least 80 seats. The Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena also projected a strong performance and said it would win a minimum of 60 seats on its own.
As the count progressed, attention quickly shifted from claims to numbers.
Nashik Election Result: What happened in 2017
In the 2017 Nashik Municipal Corporation elections, all 122 seats were contested. The BJP emerged as the largest party with 66 seats, followed by Shiv Sena with 35 seats. Congress and NCP won 6 seats each, while MNS won 5 seats. Independents won 3 seats and Republican Party of India (A) won 1 seat.
While the recount is still underway, Nashik is watching closely to see if the initial trends turn into a decisive mandate and which party finally takes control of the civic body after an unusually long pause in local governance.
