Fast bowling legend Wasim Akram praised the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for its short duration and at the same time subtly analyzed the IPL. Akram, who has been associated with the IPL in the past, made these remarks during a PSL promotional event held recently at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.
Apart from Akram, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, Ramiz Raja, PSL CEO Salman Naseer, Haris Rauf and Sahibzada Farhan were also in attendance.
“Bacche bade ho jate hain, woh liga khatam hi nahi hoti (The kids grow up but the league continues),” Akram said.
While the IPL usually lasts about two months, the PSL ends in just over a month.
“The best thing about the league is that it is played for only about 34 or 35 days, maybe a little more next year,” Akram said before citing the example of how Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL) was reduced to 43 matches in 2023.
“The best example is the BBL. They started with two and a half months. After four or five years they realized that it was not working. Now its duration is about 40 days. That’s it. That’s the beauty of the PSL,” he added.
Akram then made a direct comparison between PSL and IPL, stating that the former has better talent and quality of players.
“Of course, talent. Everyone abroad, when I talk to them, they talk about bowling in the IPL and other leagues. They say the PSL, as far as talent is concerned, is definitely number one because we have quality, not quantity,” he said.
The roadshow was intended to showcase the league’s “growth, commercial strength and future direction.”
“This event is an important opportunity to deepen global partnerships and share our long-term vision for expansion and innovation,” Naqvi said in a statement.
PSL is a six-team T20 competition that was first held in 2016.
