For those who enjoy clear skies and cool weather, expect a pleasant weekend. Nighttime temperatures have dropped by a full degree, from 13.7°C on Thursday to 12.7°C on Friday, setting a new record for the season. Pashan recorded the lowest temperature of the season in the city at 12.3°C.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that the temperature is likely to drop further and could reach 11°C on Monday. Dr Anupam Kashyapi, former director of Weather Forecasting Service and Crop Advisor at IMD, says people should take precautions against the cold and enjoy winter.
Daytime temperatures, which until now had remained stable at around 30°C, have also started to drop, making the city partly cooler. Between Thursday and Friday, the maximum temperature in Shivajinagar had fallen from 30.2°C to a slightly lower 29.8°C. Temperatures are expected to reach 29°C on Sunday and Monday.

In the district, Talegaon and Malin were the most shivering: the temperature dropped to around 11°C. The winter cold has spread across the state and the minimum temperature has dropped below normal. Jalgaon remains the coldest place in the state at 9°C and the only one with a single-digit reading. On November 10, this north Maharashtra district recorded the first single-digit minimum temperature of the season – 9.6°C. The weather office says there is a possibility of an isolated cold wave over north and northeast Maharashtra in the coming days.
“One of the causes of the cold is that the sky has been clear since the southwest monsoon began. A cloudless sky allows radiation from the sun, which heats the Earth’s surface during the day, to escape quickly in the afternoons and evenings, causing a significant drop in temperature,” says Kashyapi.

Northerly winds, blowing across the western Himalayan region such as Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, are bringing cold weather to many states in northern and central India, including Maharashtra. “The third cause of feeling colder is the dry atmosphere that does not trap moisture,” says Kashyapi.
On the other hand, the western disturbance – an upper-air cyclonic circulation – which brings winter rain and snow to Kashmir, has weakened and is expected to move eastwards, increasing the chances of a drop in night temperatures.
