Spoiler alert: This story includes details from the latest episode of HBO’s “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.”

After a surprising twist in the previous episode, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” returned with Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey), now forced to face Prince Aerion Targaryen (Finn Bennett) in A Trial of Seven for breaking the fingers of Taselle, a puppeteer Dunk is in love with.

A Trial of Seven is an ancient ritual in which an accused must fight six allies against the accuser and his own six fighters. The battle is meant to honor the Seven Gods to ensure that the judgment is fulfilled.

As Dunk struggles to gather allies, he faces betrayal. And just as he loses hope, Prince Baelor, Hand of the King and heir to the Iron Throne, intervenes and declares himself Dunk’s ally, changing the game and setting the stage for the next episode.

Adapted from the “Tales of Dunk and Egg” novellas by author and co-creator George RR Martin, the “Game of Thrones” prequel series premiered on Jan. 18 and took viewers nearly a century before the events of the former HBO giant.

“Set in a time when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet faded from living memory, great destinies, powerful enemies and dangerous deeds await these unlikely and incomparable friends,” says the synopsis of the series.

Co-creator and showrunner Ira Parker previously explained that the series takes place between “two shows that everyone has seen and everyone loves (‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘House of the Dragon’) in a time when the Targaryens no longer have their dragons.”

Parker added that the Targaryens in the new show are “very much in decline” and find themselves in this “strange in-between place.”
