Wilson said TASC appreciated the goal of phasing out fossil fuels, but condemned “the government’s continued reliance on dirty and dangerous nuclear energy.”

He said it created a “multi-generational financial and environmental liability”, leaving our descendants to face years of flood protection maintenance and “the insurmountable challenge of safe, millennium-long, highly radioactive nuclear waste isolation amid a changing climate”.

“Global instability and the conflicts in Iran and Ukraine have highlighted that nuclear power plants and their waste facilities are highly sensitive targets, undermining their promise of energy security,” he said.

“Relying on Sizewell B and C for a combined output of 4.4 GW results in excessive power generation being concentrated in East Suffolk, making the area a prime target for malicious attacks with potentially devastating environmental consequences.

“Further, TASC believes that this centralization increases the risk of the National Grid to massive blackouts due to a single accident or technical failure.”
