As World Cup fever grows ahead of Monday’s midnight match, businesses are struggling to figure out how they will handle the next day.

Staff who are hoping to stay late for England’s clash with Mexico – which is due to kick off at 01:00 BST – will want to know what their options are.

While some industries like manufacturing and retail will be less able to offer flexibility, others are offering dim wings with late starts so they can sleep well.

Joshua Elash, who runs London-based firm MT Finance Group, is allowing his employees to start work at 11:00.

“It wasn’t a dilemma at all. It was close to a no-brainer for a business,” he says.

“Everyone at this company works in an office. We don’t really have a work from home policy.

“We are a finance company, so we think it is important and critical that everyone communicate and work together in real time.

“So yes, under normal circumstances, all 125 of them would be in the office at 08:45 or 09:00 on Monday morning. But that certainly won’t be the case this Monday.”

Joshua says that he and the other senior managers will stay to watch the game, and says that if he has a passion for lying then it is only fair to extend it to the rest of the team.

“It’s good for morale,” he says, adding that it will be worth it, even if Monday isn’t a particularly productive day overall.

He adds, “Some things, you know, are more important than a day’s revenue.”
