Nearly 18 months later, on December 21, 2023, the charger reportedly failed to shut off after the battery was fully charged. What happened next, according to the filing, was thermal runaway — the batteries overheated, exploded and ejected their internal components, setting nearby objects on fire and setting off the property’s sprinkler system. This resulted in fire, smoke and water damage to the insured’s property in Pasadena.
