Benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty closed lower on Monday as renewed hostilities between the US and Iran and rise in global crude oil prices weighed on investor sentiment.The 30-share BSE Sensex fell 372.10 points or 0.48% to 76,728.37. Oil prices climbed due to geopolitical tensions. Global oil benchmark Brent crude rose 1.51% to US$73.09 a barrel.“Geopolitical tensions escalated sharply over the weekend as the US and Iran exchanged strikes over the Strait of Hormuz before agreeing to halt hostilities and renew talks, but raising serious questions over the deal’s durability and the threat of a breakdown rising, with headline risks and volatility deeply embedded in market reactions,” Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, was quoted as saying by PTI.In Asia, South Korea’s Kospi closed with losses, while Japan’s Nikkei 225, China’s Shanghai Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng closed with gains.European markets were trading lower in afternoon trade, while US markets closed marginally lower on Friday.Domestic stock markets remained closed on Friday on the occasion of Muharram.According to exchange data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought equities worth Rs 383.76 crore on Thursday.
