Popular film production company Studio Green Films rushed to the Madras High Court to get their film. Vaa Vaathiyarstarring Karthi, will be released as soon as possible modifying a prohibition order passed by the court last month that prevented the release of the film.
The modification application has been listed for hearing before a Division Bench of Justice SM Subramaniam and C. Kumarappan on Friday (January 9, 2026). The production house has urged the court to relax the order requiring it to pay Rs 21.78 crore before releasing the film.
Vaa Vaathiyar It was originally scheduled for release on December 12, 2025. However, it could not be released as the official assignee of the High Court filed an execution petition seeking directions to KE Gnanavel Raja of the production house to clear the dues to the tune of ₹21.78 crore.

The court was informed that Mr. Gnanavel Raja had entered into an agreement with businessman Arjunlal Sunderdas (now deceased) in 2011 to co-produce a film by investing Rs 40 crore each. As per the agreement reached between them, Sunderdas had invested ₹12.85 crore in the film.
However, after parting with such a large amount, the businessman withdrew from the project and decided to no longer get involved in production. He was subsequently declared insolvent and the Official Assignee was assigned the responsibility of determining his assets and liabilities.
The official assessee determined that Mr. Gnanavel Raja had to repay ₹10.35 crore to the insolvent and therefore filed an application before the High Court in 2016 seeking directions to repay the amount with 18% interest from 2013. The Division Bench allowed the application in 2019.
Since then, the Official Assignee had been filing a series of petitions before the High Court before each release of the film produced by Mr. Gnanavel Raja and had been receiving partial payments. The last such petition was filed in December of last year, before the release of Vaa Vaathiyar.
After taking note that Mr. Gnanavel Raja’s liability had increased to ₹21.78 crore, including interest, over the years, the Divisional Court had banned the release of the film until the decree amount was fully cleared.
