Simon Rex and Suzanna Son in Red Rocket
A24 / Courtesy of the Everett CollectionMikey Saber is a deplorable, degenerate, terrible person, and that’s exactly what makes him so interesting to watch. Through skillful filmmaking and scripts, longs director Sean Baker craft red rocket around a protagonist who is the worst of the worst and yet you somehow hate him and want him to succeed as much as he convinces himself he will. In addition to flawed and colorful characters, Baker’s film evokes a lived-in quality in its production design and non-professional actors. Plus, Rex’s performance is so brave and perfect that it should have earned him an Oscar nomination.
