Right on cue, exactly one year later, Apple has refreshed its most affordable iPhone yet. The iPhone 17e replaces last year’s iPhone 16e, maintaining a certain degree of continuity while incorporating changes where a generational refresh is needed. The main changes in the iPhone 17e are the A19 chip, which puts it on par with the iPhone 17, an upgrade to the C1X cellular modem (this is important, because the iPhone 16e introduced the C1 modem, Apple’s first in-house cellular modem), an improved 48-megapixel Fusion camera and what the tech giant insists is a more scratch-resistant display.

Apple has announced the price of iPhone 17e in India. Rs 64,900 for the 256GB variant, and Rs 84,900 for 512GB storage. This is a good step up at similar prices, considering that the base storage spec of the iPhone 16e was 128GB – the iPhone 16e is being assembled in India, and it’s expected that the iPhone 17e will too at some level. The dimensions remain unchanged, but there is now the same 48-megapixel Fusion camera system as the iPhone Air. The system features a main Fusion camera that supports 1x and 2x optical zoom as well as 4K video recording at up to 60fps in Dolby Vision. Apple said pre-orders for the iPhone 17e will begin March 4 in India, with availability starting March 11.

“iPhone 17e combines powerful performance and features our users love at an exceptional value, making it an attractive choice for customers looking to upgrade to the iPhone 17 family,” says Kaien Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing. “We know our customers want a product that’s built to last, and iPhone 17e delivers just that. With A19 for incredible performance, double the entry storage, a smart camera system and advanced durability, iPhone 17e is designed to stay fast, secure and valuable for years to come.”

The build, which includes an aerospace-grade aluminum chassis and Ceramic Shield 2 front cover, means the affordable iPhone 17e matches the iPhone 17 series in material similarity. Apple said the new glass coating is 3 times stronger in terms of scratch resistance and more efficient at reducing glare. The screen size remains at 6.1 inches with a Super Retina XDR OLED display and a maximum brightness of 1200 nits. The Action button also makes a prominent appearance, the key to quickly customize, access to visual intelligence and more.

The A19 chip uses the same 3-nanometer architecture as the iPhone 17, which has delivered significant performance gains as well as thermal and battery improvements. Also, one of the big leaps forward with this chip generation is a 4-core GPU with Neural Accelerator, potentially supporting console-level gaming for demanding AAA titles and hardware-accelerated ray tracing.

While the iPhone 16e marked Apple’s entry into developing cellular modems in-house with the C1 chip, the evolved C1X is claimed to be twice as fast, and Apple specifically notes that it “matches the speed of the iPhone Air.” He also noted that the C1X uses 30% less energy than the iPhone 16 Pro’s modem. Speaking of which, and true, Apple doesn’t go into detail about battery capacity, but it does say that the iPhone 17e will deliver all-day battery life, partly due to improvements in Apple silicon, the efficiency-focused troika of C1X, and iOS 26. MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging in the iPhone 17e are now rated at 15 watts, up from 7.5 watts for the predecessor.
