Stripes are a forever classic. A blue and white cotton poplin shirt is a weekend staple, and the Breton knit will always have its place. However, this season, the scope of the pattern seems wider. It’s not limited to crisp navy and white or traditional nautical references. New color combinations and bolder scales make stripes less expected and far more versatile. Even if you’re not normally attracted to them, there’s a version of you that feels right now. Below, three types of stripes are appearing this spring, each with a slightly different approach.
Maximalist Mix
With intention, pattern layered upon pattern. Mix the widths or directions of different stripes while keeping the palette related to keep the look unified. A bold sweater styled with a detailed chevron, or a graphic skirt on a fine linear stripe, where interest comes from contrasts in proportion and rhythm.
stripes as accent
Introduced selectively rather than being worn universally. A striped hair clip or claw, a statement bag, or flats that slip on easily. These subtle additions add dimension to an otherwise loose-fitting garment.
rugby revival
Heavy horizontal bands, structured straps, slightly oversized cuts. The rugby-inspired stripe brings a sporting impact that feels sharp when styled with denim, full midi, or structured outerwear. It is polished obliquely rather than coastally.
