Tottenham Hotspur could reportedly see Liverpool enter the race late for one of their defensive targets this summer.

Marcos Senesi will leave Bournemouth this summer as a free agent, with his contract at the Vitality Stadium expiring at the end of June. The 28-year-old Argentine centre-back, who joined the Cherries from Feyenoord for £10.5m in 2022, has made more than 121 appearances for the south coast club but has communicated his desire to move on.

The connection with Arne Slot adds an intriguing dimension to Liverpool’s interest – the Reds boss previously worked with Senesi at Feyenoord and is known to rate the defender highly. Liverpool also face uncertainty at the back, with Ibrahima Konate’s future at Anfield still unresolved, making a free transfer for an experienced Premier League centre-back an attractive prospect.

Ben Jacobs, speaking to GiveMeSport, suggested that Liverpool could try to make a late move for Senesi:

“Tottenham’s business depends on whether they are in the Premier League or not, but there is still that agreement in principle with Marcos Senesi if Spurs stay top,” he said.

“But Liverpool could enter the race at the last minute, so it’s perversely a close and open race. Closed in the sense that Tottenham are very optimistic that Sensei would want to join if they stay top, but open in the sense that Liverpool could try to hijack him or get relegated.”

“It is very likely that Sensei’s next destination will be the Premier League.”

Spurs’ hopes of landing Senesi depend entirely on their Premier League survival, with Roberto De Zerbi’s side still embroiled in a relegation battle heading into the final weeks of the season.

Should Tottenham crash out of the Championship, Liverpool would be well-positioned to advance quickly, and the prospect of playing in the Champions League at Anfield is likely to make the Reds a very attractive destination for a player of Senesi’s ambitions.
