Basic earnings rose to $2.160 billion, or $10.04 per diluted share, from $1.504 billion, or $6.51 per diluted share. The combined ratio improved from 90.3% to 83.6%, with the underlying combined ratio decreasing from 84.7% to 84.1%. Return on equity increased from 20.9% to 27.1% and core return on equity increased from 18.8% to 24.9%. Net investment income increased 14% to $1.070 billion pre-tax due to higher yields and an increase in average invested assets in fixed income portfolios. Net written premiums were broadly flat at $11.529 billion, although the comparison reflects Travelers’ divestment of its Canadian operations in the first quarter of 2026 – excluding that sale, NWP increased 2%.
