SB 6079 (Reducing Non-Renewals and Cancellations Due to Wildfire Risk) would create a pilot grant program to help homeowners retrofit existing structures to meet Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) Wildfire Ready Home standards, prioritize projects in high-risk areas with limited insurance access and historically underserved populations, and balance scientific rigor, cost-effectiveness, and equitable access; The pilot will initially be funded by OIC’s regulatory accounts and is described as working in conjunction with DNR’s Ready Neighbors program. The letter further states that homeowners who go through the program cannot be canceled or non-renewed based on wildfire risk, a barrier that would directly impact insurers’ non-renewal and cancellation decisions for participating properties in Washington, as described in the Washington OIC-supported proposal. As of February 9, the bill is scheduled for an executive session in the Senate Committee on Ways and Means.
