AI mode in Google Search and AI overviews get Gemini updates

People come to Search for an incredibly wide range of questions, sometimes to find information quickly, such as sports scores or the weather, where all you need is a simple result. But for complex questions or tasks where you need to explore a topic in depth, you should be able to seamlessly leverage a powerful conversational AI experience.

Today we’re rolling out two updates that bring us closer to this vision of Search: the ability to ask whatever is on your mind, no matter how long or complex, and find exactly what you need. First, we’re making Gemini 3 the new default model for AI overviews globally, so you can get the best-in-class AI answer right on the search results page, for questions where it’s useful. Second, we’re making the transition to a conversation even smoother. Now, you can easily ask a follow-up question directly from an AI overview and jump in and out conversationally with AI Mode. In our testing, we found that people prefer a naturally flowing experience in a conversation and that asking follow-up questions while maintaining the context of AI overviews makes the search more useful.

It’s a seamless experience with highlighted links to keep exploring: a quick snapshot when you need it and a deeper conversation when you want it. So next time you have a question, find the nearest Google search bar and ask anything.
