Several parts of Hyderabad received the first spell of rain of the year on Monday (February 23) as a weather system developing over the southern Bay of Bengal began influencing conditions across the region. The system has been affecting parts of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala for the past few days.

According to Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) data, at 6 pm, LB Nagar recorded rainfall of 17.3 mm, followed by 14.5 mm in Rajendranagar, 13.5 mm in Attapur, 11.8 mm in Vanasthalipuram, 6.3 mm in Chandrayangutta, 5.3 mm in Saroor Nagar and 4.3 mm in Falaknuma.

Several districts of Telangana also witnessed light rain. Doulatabad in Siddipet recorded 34.5 mm, followed by 33.5 mm in Narnoor (Adilabad), 32 mm in Ginnedari (Kumaram Bheem Asifabad), 24.5 mm in Turkayamjal (Rangareddy), 21 mm in Bantwaram (Vikarabad), 17.8 mm in Issaipet (Kamareddy) and 15.8 mm in Sirgapoor. (Sangareddy).

Several parts of Jagtial district also witnessed unexpected rain showers on Monday due to a sudden change in weather. Light showers, accompanied by a cool breeze, came as a pleasant surprise to residents of Jagtial town on Monday afternoon. Sources said power supply was disrupted for some time in several parts of the district due to strong winds accompanying unseasonal rains.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a thunderstorm warning in 17 districts of Telangana for Tuesday (February 24).

According to the latest IMD bulletin, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are very likely to occur at isolated places in Adilabad, Kumaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Rangareddy, Medchal Malkajgiri, Sangareddy and Nagarkurnool Districts.

Hyderabad and its surrounding districts for the next 24 hours will see generally cloudy skies. “Light rain or thundershowers are very likely in some parts of the city. The maximum and minimum temperatures will probably be around 32°C and 22°C respectively,” the bulletin said.
