Director H Vinoth has said that Jana Nayagan should not be seen as Vijay’s last film but as a sitting Chief Minister’s first film. Speaking ahead of the July 23 release, Vinoth also revealed that he had initially narrated the political story to another actor who did not have the courage to take it on, and described the film as a deeply political work built around the conflict between those who want to destroy democracy and those who want to protect it.
In a detailed conversation with Cinema Viketan, Vinoth explained, “No one can say for sure if this is really his last film. But one could say that it is CM Vijay sir’s first film.”
The director emphasized that Jana Nayagan should not be seen as a typical commercial artist. “This film is not just a commercial film. It is a really important political film. It is not made just to praise on television or glorify Vijay sir. It talks about very sensitive politics,” he said, adding, “Even if people have seen or already know about this politics, I think watching it will generate a lot of discussion. Therefore, the success of this film is our success too.”
He went further and said that the film’s political content is dense enough to reward repeat viewings. “About two hours long. Half an hour is serious. If you pay close attention to that half hour, you will pick up a lot of things. You can keep it and study it even for a year. There is a lot of content inside,” he said.
In one of the most revealing moments of the conversation, H Vinoth revealed that he had told the story to another actor before approaching Vijay. Without naming the actor, he said he described it as a political story and described the first half. The actor’s response was cautious. “He asked, ‘Will it work at our place?’” Vinoth recalled, laughing. “I said, ‘I don’t know, sir, we’ll see.’ After that, he didn’t say anything about the strength of the film. The anger ended right there with this film.”
He linked the film’s title to Vijay’s real-life political journey, specifically the famous selfie the actor took at the Neyveli rally that became a defining image of his political career. “The selfie that Vijay sir took in Neyveli, that selfie move, should be considered Jana Nayagan’s first look,” Vinoth said. “The title works in two ways: one, it is the hero of the people, and two, the hero who protects democracy in the story. Both meanings work together.”

On the treatment of the film, Vinoth said that it is about modern warfare rather than the cyber warfare tag that is loosely used in cinema. “Nowadays people still call everything cyber, but real cyber war is not really happening. What we are seeing is a modern war. You can see the Ukraine war or the Iran-US conflict. Drones everywhere. Even in the Indian army,” he said.
The director admitted that he is scared about the release and called Jana Nayagan “a case study” that cannot be compared with a normal film. “You can’t compare its box office collection at all with a normal movie because the things that happen with this one are completely different. The premiere is being postponed, many people have already seen it and it is released in a really intense and problematic situation,” he said.
He also expressed disappointment at the ‘A’ certificate, which excludes viewers under 18. “Children always come to see Vijay sir’s films. Honestly, that’s a shame because we only got an ‘A’ certificate,” he said.

But despite the fear and unprecedented circumstances surrounding the release, H Vinoth made one thing clear. “From the tone itself, it is 200 per cent a Vijay Sir film. There is a trace of Vinoth-style conflict. But the main conflict in this film is very sensitive,” he said. The director compared the film’s potential longevity to Soodhu Kavvum, the 2013 black comedy that had a modest release but has since gained a cult following that grows every year. “So, even after 10, 20 or 30 years, the Jana Nayagan conflict will still be relevant and super important,” he said.
