Torrential rains triggered flash floods and landslides in Doda district of the Chenab Valley on Tuesday morning, damaging houses and shops.

An official said flash floods and landslides hit Thathri town after a downpour. Dozens of houses, shops and vehicles were submerged and many were buried under rubble.

Officials said civil infrastructure was also damaged due to rocks and mud. Several vehicles were swept away by the waters. Vehicular traffic was also affected due to the closure of the Doda-Kishtwar national highway at several places.

No victims

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha reviewed the situation after the downpour. A Lok Bhavan spokesperson said Sinha had directed the district administration to provide immediate help to the affected families and expedite restoration work.

Sinha also spoke to the Doda deputy commissioner and assessed the situation. “Several houses and shops were damaged. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries have been reported,” he said. “I have directed the DC to ensure immediate relief and assistance to the affected families and expedite restoration works, including cleaning of NH-244,” he added.
