India fast bowler Gurnoor Brar has been officially warned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the first ODI against England on Tuesday. The incident occurred in England’s eighth innings when Brar picked up the ball after his delivery and threw it towards English batsman Ben Duckett. The match officials ruled that the throw was “inappropriate and dangerous.”Along with the warning, Brar received a demerit point on his disciplinary record. The charge was brought by the on-field umpires, along with the third and fourth umpires, under Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct. The rule refers to “throwing a ball at or near a player in an inappropriate or dangerous manner during an international match.”A Level 1 offense can result in an official caution, a fine of up to 50 per cent of the player’s match fee and one or two demerit points. If a player accumulates four or more demerit points within 24 months, those become suspension points, which can result in a ban. Two suspension points are equivalent to a suspension for one Test or two ODIs or T20Is, whichever format comes first. Demerit points are removed from a player’s history after 24 months.Despite the disciplinary action, Brar impressed with the ball, taking two wickets as India secured a six-wicket win over England to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. The teams will meet again in the second ODI in Cardiff on Thursday.“Brar admitted the offense and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees and, as such, there was no need for a formal hearing,” the ICC said on Thursday.
Do you think the ICC’s action will deter players from similar behavior in the future?
