IIP data: Industrial production grew 5.2% in February, manufacturing sector improved

India’s industrial output rose 5.2 percent in February, mainly due to an improvement in manufacturing output, according to official data released on Monday.According to the official statement, factory output, measured by the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), grew by 2.7 per cent in February 2025.Data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) also showed that industrial growth for January 2026 has been raised to 5.1 per cent from the earlier provisional estimate of 4.8 per cent.The manufacturing sector, which forms the bulk of the index, registered a growth of 6 per cent in February 2026 compared with 2.8 per cent in the year-ago period, supporting the overall expansion.Mining output growth eased to 3.1 per cent in February 2025, a marginal improvement from 1.6 per cent a year earlier, while power generation rose 2.3 per cent in February 2025 against 3.6 per cent growth.According to official data, the IIP index stood at 159.0 in February 2026, whereas it was 151.1 in the same month last year.In the manufacturing sector, 14 out of 23 industry groups recorded positive growth. Major contributors include “manufacturing of basic metals” (13.2 percent), “manufacturing of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers” (14.9 percent), and “manufacturing of machinery and equipment nec” (10.2 percent).In the use-based classification, infrastructure and construction goods, intermediate goods and capital goods emerged as the top contributors to growth. The production of capital goods increased by 12.5 percent, while the production of infrastructure/construction goods increased by 11.2 percent and that of intermediate goods by 7.7 percent.The production of consumer durables increased by 7.3 percent during the month, while the production of consumer non-durable goods declined by 0.6 percent.During the April-February period of FY26, industrial production growth remained stable at 4.1 per cent compared to the same period last year.
