I’ve been watching Breaking Bad for the first time and don’t get me wrong, I’m not into it enough to be able to give a full summary of my thoughts, but I’ve seen enough to have a question: do people really like Walter White? Right now the only thing I feel towards him is irritation. Is it smart? Yes of course. But he also comes off as one of the most selfish television characters I’ve ever seen and such an indecisive character that it’s actually frustrating.
I can see that he’s working on some things, that’s very clear through the different levels of his personality that I’ve seen, like when he acts very shy at some times but starts hitting people who bully his son at another time. The fact that he sleeps with his wife and then spends the night on the bathroom floor just doesn’t make sense and is, in fact, irritating.
Now I can see from the image above that it needs to improve, it even seems less frustrating at first glance, but at the moment it does nothing but annoy me. I can see that even his family is getting upset with him, they’re sick of him not wanting to fight his illness, they’re sick of him ignoring the fact that other people are suffering too, they’re sick of him rejecting people who really want to support him, and it seems like there’s a story there too, I feel like maybe a company was stolen from him somehow? I guess I’ll find out soon.
Clearly his business partner is also getting tired of him because he keeps cutting and changing. Let’s be honest, no matter how illegitimate, no one will be able to build a thriving business if one partner (the one making the product) is cutting and changing all the time.
I’m not looking for spoilers at this point, but the only thing I Googled was the initial question I had at the beginning: Does everyone love Walter White? And luckily, I discovered that I’m not the only one who isn’t a fan. It turns out that opinions on him are very divided, which makes me feel even better because now I feel like I’m more likely to enjoy the show, because it’s clearly not just him who keeps people watching.
Although I just read something that refers to him as a “dangerous, ego-driven monster that destroys everything around him,” I’m clearly embarking on a journey here, but I’m actually very excited to see how it plays out. I have no idea who my favorite character will be at the end of the series, because right now I certainly don’t have one!
